Riverhead is the seat of Suffolk County and the gateway to the North Fork. The Long Island Expressway ends here, Routes 25, 24 and 58 meet in town, and the LIRR stops at Riverhead station. That makes it the crossroads between central Suffolk, the North Fork and the Hamptons.
Downtown Main Street runs along the Peconic River, with a riverfront boardwalk, the Long Island Aquarium, restaurants and a growing number of new apartment buildings. Route 58 has most of the big-box shopping, plus Tanger Outlets. Just outside downtown, farm stands, wineries and Long Island Sound beaches in Baiting Hollow and Wading River are a short drive away.
The Town of Riverhead covers several hamlets, including Aquebogue, Jamesport, Calverton, Baiting Hollow and Wading River, so housing varies a lot. You'll find older village homes near downtown, condos and townhomes, newer single-family homes, farmhouses on larger lots, and some Sound-front properties.
